Choosing a Newborn photoshoot is a luxury, because starting on a maternity salary is daunting, but the decision to book a session is one you will never regret. Babies are not newborn for long and them tiny little faces change so quickly that capturing these precious new moments can be priceless. It’s something you can’t get back and when you newborn baby is older or even an adult themselves they will look back and treasure the images just like you will.

Now as newborn photographers its so important that safety is a priority. Posing a newborn baby and having the knowledge on how to handle a newborn is imperative. There are things you can do, there are things you definitely can’t do, there are things to watch for – for example, when baby is on their front with their knees tucked up underneath them, I’m watching the colour of their feet, to check they have good blood flow, pins and needles is never a nice sensation for anyone. Some babies are super flexible and will fold into the taco pose as easy as folding a piece of paper in half – but that’s not always the case and that’s absolutely fine, but knowing which babies aren’t as supple is vital to planning poses. You have all probably seen pictures of babies on Pinterest of babies with the hands under their chins holding their own heads – let me tell you, this pose should never be done without any training, this image is 2 shots put together in photoshop. No newborn baby can hold their own head and this is dangerous if its attempted without knowing how its done!

So that’s a little introduction into safety, just a few pointers for you to be aware of. Now a newborn shoot with us starts with an enquiry, and once we have made that contact with you we are able to send you a little email with a link to our booking site, you can check availability as well as book your session or if your prefer to talk it through with us first then get in touch and we will arrange that for you. Within our newborn page on the website you can view some of our newborn images – this is so clients can see our style, also our pricing. I want everyone who books with us to be fully aware of pricing and how it works. There is no obligation at this stage to commit to anything, I don’t expect you to know what Wall Art you want until you have seen your images at the viewing appointment – but it gives you food for thought.

So we book Newborn babies in for 7 days after due date, if baby comes early or late don’t worry, We are flexible and will get you booked in for a time and day that suits you. Now some people only book once baby has arrived and that’s ok too but we might not have the same flexibility – we only book so many Newborns a month due to the fact that babies come when they are ready and we need some wiggle room. Babies are best photographed in the first 21 days – here is why! 1, still sleepy and sleep easily 2, flexible and curled up 3, skin has not started to dry out 4, growth spurts and feeding marathons start around day 9-12 Now hats off to the new mums who have a photoshoot with me so soon after giving birth….This is probably that last thing on your mind, you have had no sleep, you still don’t feel yourself, you have just about managed a shower, make up – what’s that??……We know we get it, 100% we understand, we have been there ourselves, but here is what I’m going to say – don’t just do it for you, do it for your baby, give them the story of their life from the very beginning, you will never regret it!

Now that we have agreed on a time and date for the shoot, we send you an online invoice for your newborn shoot, you can pay this via online banking and we will then send you a receipt via email. we will also send you confirmation, a studio contract and a questionnaire – this helps us to plan your shoot, I ask you who will be part of the shoot? Parents? siblings? their names, ages and anything we should know prior to the shoot, like is your child shy or has any additional needs for example. We also ask you what colours would you like me to incorporate into your shoot, I want something to be beautiful in your home, so if you have mustard accessories then tell us about this, if your home has silver and greys then lets us know then we can prepare our workflow and make sure we use these tones in your shoot.

One week before your shoot, We will check in with you and send you a reminder, see if there is any sign of baby? We’ve had people ring us while in labour with an update – We do love our clients 🙂

So shoot day – You will come to the studio, We will have the heating on to get the studio warm, we might be sweating but we need it to be at a temperature that newborns are settled, the kettle is always on so its time to feel relaxed and enjoy your shoot. Now we say that newborn shoots are 3-4 hours long, that’s on a good day!! We work around the baby, and babies need feeding, winding, burping, nappy changing, have wind, have colic, maybe tummy ache, they very rarely just sleep, but with patience and preservation we can get them to sleep. Babies cry and don’t like having their clothes taking off – this is normal. They are brand new humans in a brand new world and every new experience is sometimes overwhelming to them and new mums, but rest assured we have seen it all before, nothing phases us, having sick on our shoulder or wee on our leggings is our kind of normal – so don’t stress, sit back, have a minute – We have got this!

So we did it, we got through the shoot, We have a camera full of images and a bag full of washing ha ha but we are done. Here is what happens next: We make you an appointment for your viewing, its usually 2 weeks after your shoot – you can bring anyone to this appointment so if your baby has super proud grandparents then please bring them along, everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the experience.  We show you your images on a 50″ screen and you get to see the results of your newborn session. At the viewing appointment, you view and choose your images and decide on Wall Art and sizes. We will help, advise and show you your options – We want you to have beautifully printed artwork on your walls for you to enjoy and smile every time you look at it. You pay for your order at the time of ordering and collect it once it has arrived with us.
